It can be an ugly job fixing an overflowing or malfunctioning septic tank, so it’s best to plan ahead.

It’s important to watch for any apparent signs the septic tank needs cleaning before it quickly becomes a problem. Although your tank should be pumped and cleaned regularly, there will be moments when it should be emptied immediately. Here, we run through the specific warning signs that we should all be aware of.

Slow Drains

If your drains are moving slowly or struggling to pass water, then it’s likely there is a blockage somewhere. Often drains can become clogged or full of sludge, creating a block in the system. If the sludge starts to build further, it could eventually cause the entire system to fail, so it’s vital to pump and clear your system before this happens.

Pooling Water

Once your septic tank has reached its total capacity, solid waste can begin to clog the system, leading to an overflow of liquid on the surface. This will generate pools of water that sit on the earth. If a small body of water does start to appear, it’s essential to have your system drained as soon as possible.

Odours

A septic tank gathers all of the used water from dirty dishes, showers, laundry, baths, and even the toilet, generating a lethal combination of smells. If your tank is leaking, overflowing, or in desperate need of a clean, the scent will quickly become unbearable. If your tank starts to smell even a little, it’s a good idea to get it serviced.

A Luscious Lawn

Though the grass may be greener on the other side, this is a visual warning that something isn’t quite right with your system when it comes to a septic tank. When sewage water leaks from the system into the earth, the grass surrounding the area will become unusually lush and green. It might look positive, but it’s a clear sign you need to service your tank.

Sewer Backup

If your system has become wholly backed up with sewage, it will need to be pumped immediately. Once the system has become full, it will no longer function correctly, leading to overflows, slow drainage, and, worst of all, pools of water.
